CHAPTER 11:
The exam room was cold and stunk like antiseptic. Allison, lying on a bed that was so cramped and narrow she had some real concern that she’d fall off at any minute, held on to her breath as the doctor probed at her elbow yet again. “The x-rays are not back yet but I’d say it’s pretty well broken.”
She stared at the older doctor, a man with a kindly face and steel-gray hair. His smile was melancholy and his eyes had a battle-weary expression in them. “I’ll live then.”
His smile lit up his face. “The x-rays will give us more of an idea of what all is going on.”
“At least I didn’t hit my head or something.”
He nodded. “True. Oh, there’s the tech now.” He stood and took a sheaf of pages from a woman who peeked into the room and held the folder out. The doctor stuck the x-rays onto a small board and nodded. “Oh yeah. That is a bad break. I think you will need surgery in fact.”
Oh shit. Allison heaved a sigh. “When?”
“Pretty soon.”
Just then the curtain parted again and Greg charged back in. he held his phone to his ear and asked, in a staccato tone, “Wait. Did you say surgery? How soon and can she perform until then?”
Allison shouted, “get out! Goddammit get out!”
Greg stared at her. He tucked the phone away and said, “Allison, you have a show tomorrow and the sponsors….”
She looked at the doctor. He said, “Are you family?”
Greg sputtered, “I’m her manager.”
The doctor’s gaze went from Allison to Greg. “Then you have to leave. Even if you were family you would have to leave because she has made it clear she doesn’t want you here.”
Greg said, “Now listen…”
Then he vanished!
Allison blinked, wondering if the whole thing was a hallucination but the sounds of a scuffle outside the curtain, and the sight of the curtain billowing and fluttering assured it hadn’t been.
Michelle, red-faced and panting, stuck her head in through the curtains. “If you want I can tape him to a chair.”
Despite everything laughter rose and then blasted past her lips. The pain in her arm had somehow gone to sleep but she moved when she laughed and it woke up, a thick buzzing and sickeningly real thing that made her eyes water and her laughter turn to a groan.
She managed to get out, “What are you doing?”
“Getting him out.” Michelle’s face was a solidly-white hue. Her lips pressed together. Greg tried to barge back in but Michelle’s arm came up and she said, “Can’t you see she’s hurting? Leave her alone.”
The doctor had clearly had enough. “Sir, you come back around that curtain and I’ll have security arrest you. Are we clear?”
Greg looked utterly flabbergasted. Allison, hazing out from pain and the surreal feeling that had wormed its way in at the sight of Michelle, said nothing. Greg muttered a few swear words and then he was gone, the sound of his phone chirping and beeping coming through the curtain.
